A Poem On The Underground Wall
The last train is nearly due
The underground is closing soon
And in the dark deserted station
Restless in anticipation
A man waits in the shadows
His restless eyes leap and scratch
At all that they can touch or catch
And hidden deep within his pocket
Safe within its silent socket
He holds a colored crayon
Now from the tunnel's stony womb
The carriage rides to meet the groom
And open wide and welcome doors
But he hesitates, and then withdraws
Deeper in the shadows
And the train is gone suddenly
On wheels clicking silently
Like a gently tapping litany
And he holds his crayon rosary
Tighter in his hand
Now from his pocket quick he flashes
The crayon on the wall he slashes
Deep upon the advertising
A single worded poem consisting
Of four letters
And his heart is laughing, screaming, pounding
The poem across the tracks rebounding
Shadowed by the exit light
His legs take their ascending flight
To seek the breast of darkness and be suckled by the night

I have a poem in my pocket for this very day,
a poem in my packet you might even say,

the one you've just heard me peirs,
so a poem in my pocket is to my heart
but i have to say sorry it's time for us to part!

I Leap Too Deep
I try to walk,
talk,
but i go stuck.
And then i leap.
Leap,
deep.
Leap deeper.
Deep into the darkness
of her eyes.
Deep into her private
things.
With my wits,
i leap deep.
Deeper into the hidden
scenes of her heart.
Disaster.
I fought.
I Lost.
I sought,
but no way out.
Too deep.
No way out.
Now am stuck
in her deep thought.

Crayons
Can you
Crayon my soul
With colours bright.
From a rainbow
That bled sunlight
After the rain.
As the sky blushed red
With pain.
When the sun
That it loved,
Sank again,
In the west.
Here's a test.
Crayon
The clours of love.
And don't forget
Deep blue.
A kaleidoscope
To choose.
A combination
That will always lose.
Whatever hues
You trust.
Jet black
Really is a must.
Can you
Colour my heart
With gladness and joy.
Invisible crayons
You will need to employ.
So no one
Can erase
That forever kiss.
With the spectrum ablaze
To burn to ashes.
Madness,
As the moon
Counts down the days.
In shades of sadness.

My Poem Came To Me In The Night
MY POEM CAME TO ME IN THE NIGHT
My poem came to me in the night
Long after I should have gone to sleep
It came with darkness inside and a fear of darkness deeper still-
It was a poem of the end of the earth
A dark poem
The last poem of the day and perhaps the last poem of forever-
It came to me in the night
And made me write it down gently
And said because there is no time left
It is impossible to add on to it
Or give it true character and feeling.-
The poem of the night and its darkness
Stilled me into vulnerable silence
And I slept and went to sleep
Far from the page I wrote.

An Evening Poem
AN EVENING POEM
An evening poem
Waits for deeper darkness
A night poem knows blackness
As home.
A morning poem is light
An afternoon poem is thick with heat.
All times have a poem
And all seasons poems also
All lives are poems
And all stories also.
We all are and all know poems
Poems pervade us
And the universe.
It is night now
But when the morning comes
Its poem will overshadow now.
What a brave new world it is
With so many poems in it
And what a life-
With such deep sadness
Waiting forever to be unexpressed.

Cross-tie Walker
I went down to the station, just to take a ride.
I went down to the station, just to take a ride.
Found myself on a flatcar, yesterday behind.
Pullin out from the platform, there was no brass band.
I pulled out from the platform, nobody raised a hand.
And there were no tears of regret from my runaway train.
Train, train, train, train.
Got no sand in my pocket, you know I aint tied down.
Aint no sand in my pocket, never do sit down.
Im just a cross-tie walker, where the freight trains run.
Run, run, run, run.
If you see me acomin, dont you waste my time.
If you see me acomin, dont you waste my time.
cause theres more miles between us than the santa fe line.
Run, run, run, run.
Mm-mm-mm-mm-mm....

Crystal Ball
Nowhere to go
Nowhere to belong
Places to go
What challenges to face
Without a soul
Who can understand?
Lost in this ocean
Of unknown faces
Coming in and out
To have their futures read
Drifting from place to place
Like gypsies
No place is home
Yet everywhere travelled
Crystal ball in hand
Fortunes to scan
Gold coins hidden in bosom
The moon at night
Guiding light
Shadows vibrating
Horses restless
Carriage shaking
Inside crystal ball shadowed
Smokey bat
Deep in the forest
Raven cawing
Count Dracula's here!

The Last Train
She was waiting for the last train,
under the lamp light.
The rain drizzled
and the lamp made shadows
on a damp grey wall and as it did
ghostly figures loomed,
spookily, highlighting
the loneliness of the night.
Passing the time, she read posters
‘drink this beer, buy that car,
holiday in Spain.
She shivered, wet, tired,
no umbrella, wearing a
thin plastic Mac.
As her train pulled away,
she snuggled up inside a carriage.
Looking out of its window,
there, against the damp wall
was a tramp, dirty, ragged,
silently swigging Meths,
no coat, no train ticket,
drinking his damnation.

Shadows
The darkness holds many shadows
that tread softly in the night
and every stranger must beware
of those that lurk in shadows
with no good will to explore.
They stalk the innocent
whose hearts are warm and pure
extending what seems a friendly lure.
So stranger as you walk in peace
beware of where you tread
as those who would do you harm
lurk deep in the shadows
and crevices of your mind.
The demons that lay bare
your mortal thread
steal around in the shadows
where you tread.
Beware of the night dear stranger
and the shadows you walk through.
The darkness holds many dangers
as you walk your journey through.

Waxed dreams
Broken crayon
grimy orange,
Smudges of
dirt, of love,
of hope of angst.
Smooth, waxed
long-ago childish
dreams.
Colourful, vibrant
(now dulled)
memories of
candy-luminous
clouds and infantile
simplicity.
Broken dreams.
Or a broken
red crayon,
angry
and lying forgotten
on the cold
hard, grey floor.

Heart Of The Flower
Now at the station, the train to another land
Lands of never seen light, light hidden in infinite night
Night in its biggest might, might of the strongest power
And there the smoke of the train to the heart of the flower
I take the first train to the heart of the flower
I take the first train to the heart of the flower
And there the smoke of the train to the heart of the flower
And there the smoke of the train to the heart of the flower
The waiting room of kingdom come, I look back upon my life
Life of loss but now the end
End of rat race overdrive
Overdrive to foreign lands
Lands of contemptous hours
And there the smoke of the train to the heart of the flower
Now on the train
This is the end of my day
I feel my spirits escape like a musical clock thats dying away
I turn once again and wave my hand and say goodbye
I never thought its so easy
I never thought its so easy
I take the first train to the heart of the flower
I take the first train to the heart of the flower
And there the smoke of the train to the heart of the flower
And there the smoke of the train to the heart of the flower
The heart of the flower
The heart of the flower
The heart of the flower

Train
Writers: leo sayer & david courtney
Running through my life
Like a river, like a song
Train keeps pushing me
Right back to the place where I belong...
Back along the tracks
Fly a million years
Right across my path
Train moves on ringing in my ears...
Come on board
Come on board
Train, oh train, take me back, again
I remember, I remember, take me back
Train, oh train, the journey ends and starts again
I remember, I remember, I remember
Ive been up all night trying to get this down
Now Im hallucinating
Staring at the wall look what Im creating...
Look at the clock Im twelve hours old
So many more remain
Way up ahead I know I see a train...
Come on board
Come on board
Train, oh train, all those memories, all over again
I remember, I remember, take me back
Train, oh train, the journey ends and starts again
I remember, I remember, I remember
Waited on the station all day
Just to see a glimpse of the morning train
Just to see the wheels turning round
Blowing up steam,
See what I mean,
You see what I mean...

Chasing Shadows
Safe in the shadows
Deep in the night
I know youre near
But youre nowhere in sight
Safe from the darkness
Down in the streets
I hear your footsteps
I hear your heartbeat
Oh, I can hear your heartbeat
On the street corner
Away from the light
I know youre near
But youre nowhere in sight
Over my shoulder
I feel youre near
I feel you moving
But you never appear
Chasing shadows
Chasing something I cant see
Chasing shadows
Will I ever be free
Chasing shadows
Into the darkness from the light
Chasing shadows
Im just a victim of the night
The night
Cloaked in darkness
You play at your game
I hear you breathing
Call out your name
Closer, closer, I feel you so near
Youre just a shadow
But you never appear
Chasing shadows
Chasing something I cant see
Chasing shadows
Will I ever be free
Chasing shadows
Into the darkness from the light
Chasing shadows
Another victim of the night
The night
Shadows in the night
Safe from the darkness
Deep in the night
I know youre here
Youre nowhere in sight
Over my shoulder
I know you are near
I feel you moving
Will you ever appear
Im chasing something I cant see
Will I ever be free
Shadows in the night

The Next Train To Eden
..... will be leaving All Reason
just as soon as it’s all clear...
But I’m too busy thinking
about poems and Cathedrals
and beaks and polished claws
tearing flesh from purpose.
And I hunt the heart that sees it
but vaguely sense I’ve lost it
to someone else’s poem
to someone else’s heart..
And this railway line that reaches
flows too much like a river.
And the race is surely done, the heart is surely gone
but the train is waiting on, the train is waiting on
Our poems all approximate
A reaching for and rising
To those great cathedrals closing
On the echoes of our truths,
and we build them
and we build them
We inch and edge towards them
O’er the tempting bridgeless gulf
Or paint and paint and paint
to bridge it but in vain
‘Til the heart is surely worn, the heart is surely gone
But the train is waiting on, the train is waiting on
And all these dried out sorcerers
with their ladders of technique
throw and throw and throw them
as if they’ll take us closer;
like the mariner who learns
every rock and every bell
and every flashing nuance
of nautical detail
and in the end he knows the sea
like a dog might know Vermeer.
And their beaks and claws are on.. the heart that’s surely worn
while the train is waiting on, the train is waiting on
I’ve read them through,
and through them blew
the pointless winds of Mars
on the trail of thin rewards
whittled crisp from hearts
in their cloisters in the sky
where heart is out of fashion
leaving reason like a canyon
and knowledge knowing nothing
can never hold dominion
For revelation comes when they’re turning down their thumbs
their beaks and claws upon the signature that runs
to catch the train that waits, that’s surely waiting on
and seeing what we’ve done, all the stars are on the run
All the stars are on the run
but a poem like Atlantis
calls us to the station
for this one time only train
and though worldliness from shadows
casts its nets upon the waters
the creaking wheels are turning
the Eden seal is burning
And all of science watches
as the clocks are rushing on;
and as vanity shouts proudly
'I can't afford the fare'.
the whistle's blowing loudly
and there's fighting at the gate
For the waiting train is gone, the waiting train is gone
where tomorrows aren't numbered, where the walking wounded run,
where passports won't be checked, where every curse is blessed
Yes the homebound train is gone where the Eden river runs
And I'm still standing here,
weighing pros and cons

Restless
I dont belong to no one
I dont belong at all
Got my face in the corner
Got my back to the wall
And pretty baby Im restless, restless
Restless through and through
Im restless, restless
You look restless too
Im a hair trigger lover
And I cant face up to nothing
Im impatient with the wind
But Im waitin here for somethin
And pretty baby Im restless, restless
Restless through and through
Im restless, restless
You look restless too
Restless sleep, twisted dreams
Moving targets, silent screams
Restless city, restless street
Restless you , restless me
Im a face at the window
Im a black satin sheet
And I cant stay warm
I stay out in the street
And pretty baby Im restless, restless
Restless through and through
Im restless, restless
You look restless too

I Used To Be But Now I Am
Suicide secured a place somewhere in my mind
Suicide stomped right out when God took a stand in my mind
Confussion cramped my thought process making it unuseable
Confussion crawled right out when God untangled my thoughts
Lonliness lurked in the bottom of my soul
Lonliness left when God grabbed hold of my soul
Tears tortured my eyes everyday and my pillow everynight
Tears trembled away when God filled my eyes with himself
What I used to be is a broken black crayon in a box of white
What I am now is the crayon with which God colors the world.

Dance Into The Light
Its there in the eyes of the children
In the faces smiling in the windows
You can come on out, come on open the doors
Brush away the tears of freedom
Now were here, theres no turning back
We have each other
We have one voice
Hand in hand we will lay the tracks
Because the train is coming to carry you home
Come dance with me
Come on and dance into the light
Everybody dance into the light
Therell be no more hiding in shadows of fear
Therell be no more chains to hold you
The future is yours - you hold the key
And there are no walls with freedom
Now were here, we wont go back
We are one world
We have one voice
Side by side we are not afraid
Because the train is coming to carry you home
Come dance with me
Come on and dance into the light
Everybody dance into the light
Do you see the sun - its a brand new day
Oh, the worlds in your hands, now use it
Whats past is past, dont turn around
Brush away the cobwebs of freedom
Now were here, theres no turning back
You have each other
You have one voice
Hand in hand you can lay the tracks
Because the train is coming to carry you home
Come dance with me
Come on and dance into the light
Everybody dance into the light

The Poem Is Restless In Me
THE POEM IS RESTLESS IN ME
The poem is restless in me-
It waits to be heard-
Now that it comes
It does not feel especially happy about itself.
It knows it is not real-
It is not much-
Just because it is called a poem by me
Does not make it a poem -
The mind has its own place-
My mind also -
I am always thinking poems are with me,
And poems waiting to come-
But who am I and what do I know?
These lines are written in the still of the morning
When the light outside still brings hope
That a new day is possible.
But so many poems have been written in the early morning
And I am so old from hearing them said to me by myself-
And what does it all mean anyway in the end when God is the Only One?
And who am I to know what God is, or invoke the name of God
In such a small thing as my own poetry?
